The RSPCA is the UK’s oldest, largest and best-known animal welfare charity, and they are as committed to alleviating suffering today as when they were founded in 1824. In the decade of their bicentenary and operating in a world that’s more complex and challenging than ever before, the RSPCA are determined to continue increasing their reach, impact and effectiveness. And if they are to achieve this, their people (both employees and volunteers) must be as motivated, resilient and innovative as possible.

The new People Strategy was launched last year, and it’s fair to say it’s been very well received.  It commits RSPCA to developing and communicating the strongest possible sense of meaning and purpose, so that all their people understand how they add value and derive a greater sense of satisfaction from their contribution to our progress. Under the leadership of their Chief Executive and a refreshed Trustee board, RSPCA have completed a root-and-branch review to understand how they can continue to achieve their objectives, and People & Culture are right at the strategic centre of the organisation’s narrative of change. So this is a fantastic time to join an inspirational and focused senior team that’s building and delivering a dynamic new strategy for the Society.

Part of what makes this role so compelling is their sheer scale and complexity: RSPCA have got more than 5000 talent and committed people, made up through employees, apprentices, and volunteers. They want to ensure that the RSPCA remains an employer and cause of choice, to which staff and volunteers are proud to belong. You’ll be passionate about developing a strong employer brand, creating a learning culture and a supportive work environment. Your commitment to talent development, sound governance and continuous improvement will be underpinned by a sophisticated and appreciative knowledge of organisational development, culture and HR strategy.

Candidates must bring significant experience of setting (and sustaining) innovative and strategic HR direction in organisations of a similar complexity and scale to the RSPCA. CIPD-qualified or equivalent, you need to have a strong affinity with our purpose, a clear understanding of how charities can continually improve, and a broad set of professional approaches to achieve it. Intellectual and professional curiosity, an open approach to ideas, personal resilience and a high level of emotional intelligence are all non-negotiable.

The past 18 months has seen transformative change reach every corner of the RSPCA, and that process of change is now having a hugely beneficial impact on their external work. Let’s keep up the pace.
